The month of
Januaryis the first month funding the year and the first of seven months that have 31 days (the others are Hike, May, July, August, October, and December). January's term derives from
Janus, the name of the Romish god of beginnings and endings, entrances and exits, doors and gates, after whom the Romans commanded January
Ianuarius. It belongs to the same brief conversation family as
ianua, the Latin word for door.
